Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Leads Consultation on Nairobi Rivers Restoration Amidst Floods

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua led a crucial consultation meeting at his Karen official residence this morning to address the urgent need for restoring the Nairobi Rivers amidst enhanced rains and floods.


The meeting, attended by key stakeholders, focused on developing sustainable solutions to mitigate the negative impacts of pollution and flooding in Nairobi and its environs.

During his address, Deputy President Gachagua emphasized the importance of joint action from all sectors to reclaim the rivers of Nairobi as valuable socio-economic resources. He highlighted the need for collaboration between government agencies, communities, and other stakeholders to ensure the rivers are clean and contribute to the well-being of residents.

The meeting also discussed the devastating effects of the current floods, which have led to the destruction of homes and livelihoods in several parts of the country. Deputy President Gachagua underscored the need for urgent action to prevent further damage and establish structures for sustainable

management of flood episodes in Nairobi.

Key issues addressed included the relocation of communities living along the rivers, mapping and segmentation of these communities, and the need for a multi-agency approach to river regeneration. Deputy President Gachagua emphasized the importance of integrating the Affordable Housing Programme with the rivers' restoration plan to ensure sustainable development.

The meeting recognized the efforts of various agencies in cleaning and rehabilitating the rivers since last year's El-Nino period. Deputy President Gachagua commended the Environment and Land Court in Nairobi for its partnership in tree planting and community engagement activities along the Nairobi River in Korogocho.

The Country’s second in command urged all stakeholders to contribute ideas and work together towards a cleaner and more sustainable Nairobi. He emphasized the importance of making decisions that benefit the people and ensure the long-term prosperity of the nation.
